Updates From the Field

ShelterBox is providing emergency shelter aid and other essential items to people who need it in Gaza.

We continue to scale up our response, providing thousands of tents to people uprooted from their homes and left without shelter. ShelterBox is working with local partners and Rotary in Jordan and Egypt to get thousands of tents, tarps, mattresses, blankets and other essentials to those that need it most.

Our teams are using two separate routes to get aid into Gaza, and will continue to do everything we can to meet the overwhelming humanitarian need. The situation is complex with bombardments making it extremely difficult to get aid in Gaza.

Our aid is currently in queue at the Rafah boarder, waiting to enter Gaza. We have additional aid in Egypt that will join the queue shortly as well, and more aid en route from Belgium that will enter via Jordan.

SHELTERBOX RESPONSE IN GAZA

We are scaling up our work in Gaza and have three different projects:

Project 1: Is providing emergency shelter aid and other essential items to thousands of people in Gaza. Working with a local organization, MAP, we are providing shelter items like tarpaulins and rope so people can make their own temporary shelter or make repairs to damaged buildings. We are also providing blankets, mattresses, pillows, and floor mats, as well as washing sets, water carriers, kitchen sets, and sanitary items.

Project 2: In addition to the shelter items provided in project 1, we are working to provide tents in Gaza, through Egypt.

Project 3: Working with Rotary in Jordan, project three will also look at providing tents in Gaza through Egypt. Rotary in Jordan is supporting with warehouse options to enable greater flexibility and quicker delivery of aid. ShelterBox and Rotary in Jordan have previously worked together during previous responses including supporting refugees fleeing Syria.

What is happening in Gaza?

Up to 1.9 million people are displaced

That’s 85% of the population with no choice but to shelter in community buildings like schools, makeshift shelters, or out in the open. There is severe overcrowding and disease is spreading. People don’t have what they need to protect themselves or their families from the harsh winter weather.

We are providing emergency items like tarpaulins and rope, to help people make damaged buildings and other shelters watertight. Blankets, mattresses, pillows and floormats will help people to stay warm. We’re providing washing sets, water carriers, kitchen sets, and items like diapers, toothbrushes, and sanitary items. Vital items for people with no belongings and unable to return home.

Access to water, food and medicine is very difficult. It’s made worse by fuel shortages. Without electricity, people cannot use lights in the dark evenings, keep warm, or cook food.

Together with our partner MAP we’ll be sourcing items in Egypt and Türkiye. The situation is complex, but our aid will reach people via the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

With your support, we can provide emergency shelter and essential items to the people who have nowhere to live in Gaza, and around the world.

ShelterBox continues to call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and protection of all civilians. As a humanitarian organization, ShelterBox must remain neutral and apolitical. We go wherever the humanitarian need of civilians is the highest, and right now that is in Gaza.
