Our Rotary Heroes

by ShelterBox Canada August 6, 2021

Disasters and conflict are inevitable and frequent, and the need for aid is continuous. ShelterBox Canada receives incredible financial and logistic support from Rotarians all over the world. During the 2020-2021 Rotary year, there were 134 Rotary Clubs across Canada that became Heroes. A ShelterBox Canada Hero is a Rotary Club that has recognized the continuing need to prepare for disasters and raises funds and awareness for ShelterBox Canada.

Each year, ShelterBox Canada recognizes clubs for their continuing dedication to see no family without shelter after disaster. Read on to hear about a few of our current Hero award winners and how they supported us throughout the last year:

1. The Rotary Club of Peachland

In May 2021, the Rotary Club of Peachland (British Columbia) hosted a used book sale to help raise funds for ShelterBox Canada. Through their community book sale, they were able to raise over $1,500. They have been awarded with a Silver Hero Award this year.

2. Rotary District 7070 (Ontario)

In June 2021, Rotary Clubs across District 7070 (Ontario) camped out in ShelterBox tents to raise funds and awareness for disaster relief. With their hard work, they raised an incredible $15,600 for ShelterBox Canada!

Participating clubs from District 7070 that received Hero Awards are: The Rotary Club of Toronto West, The Rotary Club of Colborne, The Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise, The Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise, The Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise, The Rotary Club of Campbellford, The Rotary Club of Oshawa, The Rotary Club of Wellington, The Rotary Club of Cobourg, The Rotary Club of Scarborough, The Rotary Club of Port Hope, and Toronto Rotaract.

3. The Rotary Club of Orangeville Highlands (Ontario)

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rotary Club of Orangeville Highlands was unable to host their annual Taste of Autumn fundraiser. Instead, they found a creative way to raise funds by hosting a virtual chef series. This series included 6 episodes of online culinary classes featuring local chefs preparing various dishes.

This project was a huge success, and they raised $2,000 to support ShelterBox Canada. The Rotary Club of Orangeville Highlands received a Bronze Hero Award for their support!

4. The Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue (Alberta)

Every year, The Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue hosts a fundraiser to support ShelterBox Canada. This year, the club held a virtual Trivia Night and raised $1,780 for their 3rd annual event. The club also received a Bronze Hero Award to recognize their support for ShelterBox Canada.

Thank you to all the incredible Rotary Clubs across Canada for their commitment to disaster relief! With your continual support, we have been able to help provide vital aid and resources to families who have experienced disaster and conflict!
